Wil himself on trumpet, Liam Byrne reeds, Andy Bramall guitar\/banjo, Al Harris double bass, Rob Cotterell drums. Plus Wil, Andy and Al all took turns on vocal duties.<br>With instrumentation and style possibly more reminiscent of the Alex Welch or Humphrey Lyttelton 1960s approach than that of the Ken Colyer, or more commercial British \u2018trad\u2019 bands of the time, we were treated to some rousing renditions of the staple tunes of the genre. The stand out performance for me however was their version of Humphrey Lyttelton\u2019s \u2018Bad Penny Blues,\u2019 Wil Robinson\u2019s replication of H L\u2019s skilfully crafted muted trumpet \u2018lead\u2019 being perfectly executed.<br>The interesting footnote to the original recording (which was remarkably a \u2018Top Twenty\u2019 record for HL in 1956) is the fact that Johnny Parker\u2019s wonderful barrelhouse piano intro to the song was \u2018appropriated\u2019 by Paul McCartney for the structure of his Beatles\u2019\u00a0No. 1 hit\u00a0\u2018Lady Madonna\u2019. Inventively &#8211; given the absence of piano in Last Minute Five\u2019s line-up &#8211; the guitarist played the intro, note for note, with no loss of momentum.<br>Another full house evening, an enthusiastic reception, plus we\u2019ve decided to carry on next year after all; starting from March or April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our penultimate \u2018Jazz at the Junction\u2019 evening for this year on Wednesday 19th November featured Wil Robinson\u2019s \u2018Last Minute Five\u2019 in an excellent session of the British strand of Traditional New Orleans Jazz.
